Launch of the One Team-One People Initiative

This morning (12/10/21), in Milan, marked the beginning of the "One Team-One People" initiative led by the Center for Jewish Impact, in collaboration with Maccabi Tel Aviv Basketball Club, and the World Zionist Organization's Department for Israel & Holocaust Commemoration. Together, we are working to strengthen ties between Israel and European Jewry.

The goal of “One Team – One People” initiative is to use professional sports as a vehicle to promote tolerance, and to combat antisemitism and bigotry. In addition, it serves as a platform to explore European Jewish history and to enhance ties between Israel and European Jewry, while positively representing Israel throughout Europe.

Ahead of the Maccabi Tel Aviv Basketball Club's game against Olimpia Milano, representatives of Maccabi Tel Aviv, the Center for Jewish Impact and the World Zionist Organization's Department for Israel & Holocaust Commemoration met with leading figures in the Milan Jewish community. The participants were: Shimon Mizrahi, Chairman of Maccabi Tel Aviv Basketball Club, Ami Bitton, Manager of the Maccabi Tel Aviv team, Itai Hacham, representative of the Center for Jewish Impact and the World Zionist Organization, Milo Hasbani, President of the Jewish Community of Milan, Roberto Jarrah, President of ORT Milan, and Daniele Mizrachi, Head of Communications of the Jewish community of Milan.

The meeting centered around the community’s history and contemporary Jewish life in Milan. In addition, participants reflected on the ability of professional sports to create lasting bonds between people.

Local Jewish community leaders wished Maccabi great success ahead of their game against Milano, which hundreds of members of the Milano Jewish community are expected to attend in support of the team. This is part of a new initiative to enhance the ties between Israel and European Jewry through Maccabi Tel Aviv’s EuroLeague games.

We are privileged to have the opportunity to use the power of basketball to connect between Israel and the Jewish community of Milan, during the first away game of Maccabi in the EuroLeague this season.
