Kafka and the Search for Meaning: CJI and the Embassy of the Czech Republic Host Diplomatic Salon

Last night, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Israel hosted a special Diplomatic Salon initiated by the Center for Jewish Impact (CJI). The event explored the challenges of navigating an increasingly unpredictable world through the lens of Czech and Jewish philosophy.

Titled “Kafka’s Guidebook for an Uncertain World,” the evening brought together diplomats, cultural figures, academics, and members of the public for a thoughtful discussion on how enduring philosophical ideas can offer direction in an era marked by conflict, global crises, social upheaval, and ongoing instability.

The program featured Dr. Jeremy Fogel, scholar of Jewish philosophy and host of the Think & Drink Different podcast, who presented a contemporary perspective on the connections between philosophical thought, identity, and meaning. He was joined by Judita Matyášová, Czech journalist and author of On the Road with Kafka, who shed light on Franz Kafka’s enduring influence and the striking relevance of his work to today’s world.

The event was held in the presence of H.E. Veronika Kuchyňová Šmigolová, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Israel, and Mr. Robert Singer, Chairman of the Center for Jewish Impact. In his remarks, Singer noted: 

“At a time when uncertainty has become a global norm, dialogue grounded in values and ideas is more vital than ever. Philosophy is not an intellectual luxury- it is a practical tool for understanding reality, strengthening personal and communal resilience, and creating meaningful bridges across cultures, nations, and diverse communities. Initiatives like this highlight the power of ideas as a foundation for deep and lasting diplomacy."
